Joe and Ellen

Hunger

Joe and Ellen

They have this glammed glass statue
grinning from the papers
They rant with glee about her excessive nature
She's on magazines in the big chain markets
Where poor people work

And I want to shut it out
I hear the soul within me shout
Famed lovers in silk covers
While most the world sleeps with hunger

Is there pollen sweeter than a mind unshackled
By fancies of fame and its bland magic?
These slave machines are turning simple people
Into gears and screws

I've been alive
Long enough to notice that there's plenty in the world
To keep everyone from
Starving and dying
Of long cured diseases
It's so hard to stop exceeding
But what's the use in it?
We all need each other in the end anyway
